I appreciate your thoughts, Brittany! It sparked some of my own:

As I explore more of what I feel is "authentic" in my art, I have felt the tension between remaining true to the spontaneity of the process, and wanting others to see/engage with the work. There is also the component of habit: years before everything online was set up for monetization and data collection, I used platforms as a sort of archive, and that was satisfying because it would reach people in my community and enhance my offline experience. It has been a challenging habit to steer away from over the years knowing that any platform's purpose now is not to engage people in the work, but to keep them on whatever platform. It also has a draining and distracting effect on me as the artist. Ultimately, I've said no thanks to that experience, except occasionally. I'd rather be obscured by the algorithm than try to keep up, so posting has become a very intentional action. There's also the fact that my work is very experimental and was perhaps always destined to alienate those in search of easy or quick entertainment.

I relate to what you describe about in-person experiences at your markets. Looking at my online presence, the numbers suggest low impact/engagement. But when I play shows live at venues, or go to support another artist, there is a lot of depth and sustained connection with the audience and the performers. There is a significantly greater satisfaction in the energy exchange of the shared experience, so much so that it really diminishes the allure of attention and metrics, specifically online.

That being said, I have found many amazing artists through the internet, so I believe I can appreciate the game for what it is. At the end of the day, I think cultivating our attention spans and personal taste is an important practice as artists, but also as humans looking to have an expansive, embodied experience of our limited time on Earth.

I appreciate you! Cheers!
